Dick Horne

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of RP “Dick” Horne, Tournament Founder for our Rice Planters Amateur and Life Member at Snee Farm Country Club. Mr. Horne passed away on November 11, 2024, after a short illness. Mr. Horne was an accomplished golfer and was inducted into the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame (1986) and the Citadel Sports Hall of Fame (2003) for his golfing efforts which included winning a Senior SC State Amateur title (1999) as well as being a two term SCGA past president (1995, 1996).

Though known for being an outstanding golfer, Mr. Horne’s legacy at Snee Farm Country Club is The Rice Planters Amateur Golf Tournament. The first Rice Planters Amateur was held in 1973 and throughout the years his tournament saw an illustrious group of golfers compete on our course. Our tournament winners have won 12 major championships and over 160 tournaments on the PGA, Champions, and Korn Ferry Tours. During our 50th anniversary event in 2022 The Rice Planters Amateur Tournament Committee celebrated naming the championship trophy the “RP Horne Championship Trophy” to signify Mr. Horne’s tournament legacy to both Snee Farm Country Club and amateur golf. He returned annually to Mt. Pleasant to attend the Rice Planters Amateur, personally thank each player competing that year, and was always part of the champions’ ceremony at the tournament’s conclusion. The Rice Planters Amateur Tournament Committee will greatly miss his presence and support as he always had wonderful compliments and some great stories about the early days of the event.
